What to do in September — the finest month of the year.

Ferragosto is behind us, the tour buses have vanished from the square, the lake is still warm, restaurants return to the rhythm of quietly booked tables. September in Castel Gandolfo is the month the locals keep for themselves. Here is how to live it as a traveller.
The climate: heat that softens
In September the average maximum temperature in the Castelli settles around 23.7 °C, with night lows near 12 °C ([Wikipedia — Albano Laziale](https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albano_Laziale)). Days begin cool, warm quickly toward noon and stay mild until sunset: a light jacket is only needed in the evening. Rain remains rare in the first half of the month; the risk of thunderstorms grows in the last week, when lake humidity meets the first cold currents.
The light is the one for which Grand Tour painters used to come and spend autumn on the Alban Hills: low, golden, with long shadows already at five in the afternoon. Piazza della Libertà at sunset, on a September Sunday, is probably the best moment to photograph the village.
The lake: still swimmable
The bathing season of Lake Albano runs from June to September ([SeaTemperature.info](https://seatemperature.info/it/lago-albano-temperatura-mare.html)). In September the surface water drops to an average of 21.5 °C, peaking at 26 °C on the first days of the month: swimming is still pleasant, without the August crowds. The free beaches along via Spiaggia del Lago remain open, kayak and pedalo rentals along the lakefront continue on weekends until the end of the month, weather permitting.
A little-known detail deserves attention: Lake Albano's water temperature drops rapidly below two metres, as noted by the [Genzano Civil Protection unit](https://www.protezionecivilegenzano.it/comunicazioni/2026-05-19-sicurezza-laghi-nemi-albano/). Swimming near the shore is safe; venturing toward the centre of the crater requires caution, especially for children and untrained swimmers.
The month's festivals
September opens with the patronal feast. Saint Sebastian, patron of Castel Gandolfo, is celebrated on the first weekend of the month with a procession from the Pontifical Parish Church of St Thomas of Villanova, music in the square and fireworks over the lake ([Visit Castelli Romani](https://www.visitcastelliromani.it/informazioni/castel-gandolfo/events/)). It is not a tourist appointment: it is a village feast, dense with families, children returning from school with painted faces and grandmothers sitting in the square until midnight.
In the neighbouring Castelli, September is the month of food festivals. Ariccia celebrates the 73rd Porchetta IGP Festival on the first weekend (4-6 September), Rocca Priora the 32nd Porcini Mushroom Festival the following weekend (4-20 September), Velletri the 34th Porcini Mushroom Feast (3-20 September), Albano the Bajoccofestival of performing arts (11-13 September) ([Castellinforma](https://www.castellinforma.it/)). All are within a twenty-minute drive from Castel Gandolfo.

Papal Villas: finally a calm visit
With the end of the papal stay in mid-August and the closing of the peak season, the complex of the Papal Villas — Apostolic Palace, Barberini Garden, Vatican Observatory — returns to normal hours and capacities. Guided tours, bookable on the Vatican Museums website, find smaller groups and slower rhythms. It is the best moment for the full tour, with stops at the garden's belvederes and in the portrait gallery.
The Municipality of Castel Gandolfo also notes the ordinary guided openings of the papal complex starting on 17 August ([visitcastelliromani.it](https://www.visitcastelliromani.it/castellinforma/)). Those who want to combine the visit with a walk to the lake can book the first morning tour, lunch in the historic centre and descend to the lakefront in the afternoon.
Walking: the crater's trails
September is when hiking truly returns. In August the heat discourages even the trained; from mid-September the circuit of Lake Albano — ten kilometres along the shore, almost entirely in the shade of holm oaks and chestnuts — becomes practicable again without effort. The [Castelli Romani Regional Park](https://www.parcocastelliromani.it/) keeps the trails signposted and the noticeboards up to date.
For a shorter itinerary, climb to the belvedere of Monte Cavo (30 minutes by car from the village, then thirty on foot): in September the view covers the Tyrrhenian coast from Anzio to Terracina — something that summer haze made impossible.
A final tip
Book midweek. The lakeside restaurants — the real ones, where Romans eat on weekends — in September have tables free even on Saturday evening, but from Tuesday to Thursday they become a small luxury: few covers, serene service, prices identical to the rest of the year. It is the moment to try the places that summer makes impossible.
